APH Announces new Full-page Tactile Graphics Display at AER Conference

At the 2016 AER International Conference in Jacksonville, the American Printing House for the Blind showed off, among other braille products, their latest collaboration with Orbit Research, a new product called the Refreshable Tactile Graphics Display.
,
According to the APH page, this tactile display will have the ability to depict maps, pie charts, and very complex diagrams. Developed by Orbit Research, makers of the soon to be released Orbit Reader 20, this device will be able to depict any image in a tactile form. It is also going to be interactive, allowing a student to draw on, zoom, or scroll directly from the display itself. The attention to detail will be achieved through dots that can be raised or lowered independently, and the adjacent dots are only 4 MM apart, which will allow the device to show even greater detail than what you see on a conventional Braille display. They also announced that it will support images in most file types, but didn't specify what those types were. The device will have an SD card slot, so it is possible to load images from a memory card to be displayed on the device. The unit will also allow someone to draw on the display surface and then save the image to a PC. No projected date of release was announced, and the prototype being shown was 25% of the size that the full version will be. The full version will be 8.5x11. APH indicated that it will be entering field testing "soon". For more information, please see the source link.
