KeySoft 9.1 for the BrailleNote to be Talked about Monday

Back in October, we learned of KeySoft 9.1, the first major upgrade for the BrailleNote Apex family including support for WPA2 wireless encryption, Microsoft Word files, epub books, and NLS audiobooks. The update appears to be nearing release, as Humanware will be presenting on this week's Accessible World Tek Talk program. Interested persons can learn more on Monday at 8 PM eastern. We'll give you a full report as a part of our ATIA coverage next week.

Wpa2 is nice but the real question is will they support AES encryption over wpa2? Wpa2, in and of itself, isn't an encryption it'sjust a standard for transmitting encrypted wireless data and must be paired with another encryption or verification routine in order to work. Currently, the notetakers only support TKIP, which is common for wpa but not over wpa2. TKIP is not an encryption, but rather a method of making sure no data was altered during transmission. The notetakers that do support wpa2, at this moment, do not support AES making their wpa2 support of limited use. They'll definitely support wpa2. That's a step in the right direction, but will they be the first notetaker to actually include full support for wpa2/AES?

Someone asked about WPA2 and AES, and the Humanware representatives confirmed that AES will be supported. Other interesting enhancements include improved support for Word DOC files--sorry, no DOCX support as yet; the ability to zip and unzip zip-file archives; streamlined and improved support for both hard-wired and wireless networking; support for NLS digital talking books; full support for the Apex as an input device when the Apex is used with a PC and screen reader; and the ability to password-protect full access to the Apex. I don't feel that I heard anything really revolutionary, but there are some nice enhancements coming.
