Classifieds: Visible Lives: Oral Histories of the Disability Experience. Join us and tell your story

This project works to preserve and document a thematic history through personal recollections. We are collecting stories of New Yorkers who have lived (or currently live) with a visual impairment or a disability. The Library is training community members to conduct these interviews (you can volunteer for this as well and collaborate on the process). Interviews will be shared in a preservation archive and on the New York Public Library website
Visible Lives is a project of Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library in Manhattan. A public archive will be kept at this local branch for future generations to listen to and research.
THE INTERVIEW PROCESS:
After you sign up, you will be contacted by a trained oral history interviewer in order to schedule your interview. Interviews can be conducted at the Andrew Heiskell Library, over the phone, or at a location that is most convenient for you. Interviews typically last between 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on how long you’d like to tell your story. This is your opportunity to tell your story in the way you’d like it to be told. Interviewers will come prepared with ideas for questions, but feel free to change topics or suggest topics before the interview begins. We will send you a copy of your interview in the mail.
