Meet some of our presenters:

Monica Bartley, MSS is a Community Organizer at CIDNY and works with our network of community advocates. She trains people to survey polling sites, street access, restaurants and green markets. Her voting rights advocacy efforts contributed to a civil rights victory in the federal courts for people with disabilities in New York City. Monica educates the media about the lives of people with disabilities and access issues in New York City. She has been for her work promoting social justice by the New York Women’s Foundation in its book Radiance.

Lourdes Rosa-Carrasquillo, Esq. is Director of Advocacy at CIDNY. She analyzes government policies related to education, housing and civil rights issues. She teaches individuals to know their civil rights and to advocate effectively for themselves and the community. She leads delegations of people with disabilities who describe their experiences to legislators and the media. She has been honored for her work promoting social justice by the New York Women’s Foundation in its book Radiance.

Karen Gourgey, Ed. D. is Director of the Computer Center for Visually Impaired People at Baruch College, CUNY. She is the Past Chairperson of the PASS Coalition which is responsible for making strides in the installation of audible signals in New York City. She was honored with the Matthew I. Sapolin Visionary Award during the 6th Annual Employment & Visual Impairment Conference at Baruch College in 2013.

Edith M Prentiss is the Chair of the Taxis for All Campaign. The campaign is responsible for achieving a legal victory that will result in greater availability of taxis for people with disabilities. She is the President of the 504 Democratic Club and Vice President of Legislative Affairs of Disabled In Action. Recently, she was presented with the Sandra Schnur Advocacy Award by Concepts for Independence for her advocacy work.

Virginia born, Lloyd Burlingame’s dream of being a New York stage designer came true when he designed his first Broadway show at age 25. Subsequently designing either sets, lights or costumes for 44 more shows on the great white way. At age 36, in addition to his design work, he began teaching and chairing the Department of Design at NYU Tisch School of the Arts for 26 years--18 of which he was legally blind. On retiring from NYU, nearly totally blind, no longer able to see to paint and draw, he turned to writing as his major creative outlet and has recently written and published 3 books
