Classifieds: Free Teleseminar on Changes to Braille
The Braille Authority of North America (BANA) has set the date of
January 4, 2016, as the official date upon which the USA will
transition from conventional American English Braille to the Unified
Braille Code (UEB). Think Y2K for Braille!
Although this date will come and go, many books are available and will
remain available in conventional Braille. Others will be produced in
UEB, and others will be available (at least for a time) in either
format. However, what does this change mean for the longer term? What
does it mean for people using electronic braille devices? What about
devices manufactured after January 4, 2016? What about students who
use braille in the classroom? With this as backdrop, ACB Families invites you to join us for our
August informational teleconference which we’re calling “Unified
Braille Demystified”. Our speakers will discuss some of the more
significant changes which UEB will bring to our braille books and
devices, the impacts of UEB on technology, and how the transition
might play out for children and other students who use braille in the
classroom. Come with your questions and leave with information that
will help you weather this coming shift to the Unified Braille Code.
Speakers: Deanna Scoggins and Dave Wilkinson. Deanna resides in
Louisville, KY, and is a Board Member of ACB Families. She has
assisted the American Printing House for the Blind with preschool
materials development and has a wealth of experience with very young
braille readers. Dave Wilkinson is a life-long access technology user
and a Sales Manager for Himms Technologies. He is familiar with
braille devices and has participated in a number of UEB meetings and
