Classifieds: Free NYC Community, Culture, and Tech Fair for pwd: 10/14

FREE: The NYC Talking Books library's Fall fair is coming up on Saturday Oct 14th, 10am - 4pm at the Heiskell Library, 40 West 20th Street, in Manhattan. This year our added theme is Employment, Skills Building, and Engagement. Join us for a day of speakers, workshops, and consultations focused on career advancement, including skills building, job search, resume & interview tips, and placement support. Hear about careers in different fields from those already in them, and learn practical employment information from local service providers and our keynote speaker: Lindsey Teel, from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy. Prior to her work at ODEP, Lindsey worked as a staffer for two Members of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas. Lindsey is herself a person with a disability (low vision) and was hired using the federal government’s disability hiring initiative called Schedule A. Also speaking will be filmmaker Shannon Ryan, winner of the British Film Academy’s First Award for a Student with a Disability and Adam Linn, journalist with NPR. Sign up for individual consultations with Robyn Saunders, NYPL Career Coach, on how to set yourself apart. Marzena Ermler of NYPL Job Search Central will speak on tips for giving great interviews. Of course we will also have tables of technology demos; cultural institutions and museums with accessible offerings; accessible sports groups; groups that offer free ongoing education and entertainment; accessible recreation clubs; government agencies; maker projects; and advocacy and support groups. New museums participating this year include NYC Transit Museum, and the Museum of the Chinese in America. As usual, goodie bags will be provided on entry while supplies last. Large print and braille materials will be available at the event, including list of tables in order. This event is FREE. No registration required.
