Kindle 3 Manual Available as Text from Blind Bargains, Reveals More on TTS and Voice Guide

Amazon has uploaded the manual to the Kindle 3, which will ship later this week. This iteration of the popular book reader includes a new voice guide feature to read menus and some book information. In looking at the manual, its implementation is a mixed bag. We've converted the manual to a plain text format which is linked to this post. Read on for some initial impressions. \

According to the manual, Voice Guide is a new experimental feature which will read all menus and some information about the current book. According to an example from the manual, the current position in a book will be announced when it is opened. It is unclear if other information such as battery power or connection status will be similarly spoken.

One area where the manual itself does well is the description of the unit itself. It gives the location of the keys and plugs in relationship to each other, making it seemingly simple for a blind person to orientate themselves to the unit. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for the descriptions of many of the unit's functions, such as this description on how to turn on Voice Guide.

To turn Voice Guide on or off, follow these steps:
1.If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.

2.Press the Menu button.

3.Move the 5-way to underline "Settings" and press to select.

4.Press Next Page to go to Page 2 of Settings.

5.Move the 5-way to underline "turn on" or turn off next to the "Voice Guide"  setting and press to select.

It is unclear whether the menus wrap or not. If they don't, these instructions could be easily modified to give the exact key presses to turn on this feature. Many Kindle settings can also be changed from Amazon's website, but it is unclear if Voice Guide is one of these settings.

As for text-to-speech, the implementation seems to leave much to be desired. One can control the speed and volume of the text being read as well as play or stop the reading with a hotkey. There is no mention, however, of the ability to read by line, word, or character. Also, the ability to highlight passages or view popular passages highlighted by others appears to also be inaccessible.

Many of these features, including Voice Guide, are listed as experimental, and Amazon includes an address for Email feedback regarding these features. Many of the issues surrounding the current device could be solved with firmware updates, and perhaps this will occur. We'll post more about Kindle 3 as we learn about it. Meanwhile, go check out that manual.

An active account with rfb&d and access to their audioPlus downloads book format is required in order to obtain this copyrighted material. Humanware's Michel Pepin Provides Insight on Future of Oratio, Aiming for Version 6 Support

Amidst speculation of the future of the Oratio screen reader for Blackberry phones, we checked in with Humanware's Michel Pepin to get a status report on current and future developments. While support for current devices running version 5 may be lagging, we are told that version 6 will be a different story, fueled in part by a partnership between Humanware and Research in Motion.

According to Pepin, "The keep us ahead of the game we have entered into an agreement with RIM to work on Oratio development for unreleased devices and version in order to have all fixes and changes found during testing of Oratio and implemented in the BB O/S prior to the devices release. This represents a major improvement as it will provide us with the tools to act faster and bring Oratio support to selected BB devices as they or shortly after they are brought to market." Pepin also clarified Humanware's relationship with Code Factory, brought into question by recent posts on the Blackberry Access mailing list by stating that Code Factory has a dedicated staff member working with Humanware on the Oratio project and on future developments. BBAccess's Carlos Palomino posted an earlier message citing sources stating no new devices would be supported until 2011.

As for the support of current devices and the introduction of Oratio, Pepin offers the following: "HumanWare (Humanware's objectives with Oratio has always been to try to support QWERTY keyboard devices, however we never claimed that we would support all of them as they are brought to market. I may have been too open in the past to mention which devices we were testing Oratio on however I never claimed in any communication that these devices would have Oratio support. Humanware's mandate in this project is to provide an accessibility solution to BB device which we did with the Curve 8520. I understand this is a year old device and the mobile world evolves at a speedy rate with the introduction of newer and more powerful devices and at HW we will keep working on bringing Oratio support to selected QWERTY Keyboard devices however each device as its own specifications which means that Oratio support for a 5.0 device does not automatically mean that all QWERTY keyboard 5.0 devices can have Oratio support. Each device needs to be tested as they behave differently given their features and network type." According to Pepin, Much of the difficulty has come with developing a screen reader for a new platform (Java ME).

Humanware Raising Prices of Notetakers up to $184, Also Prices VoiceNote Apex

According to several sources, Humanware is planning to raise the price for two of their popular notetakers in September. the 32-cell version of the BrailleNote Apex will list for $6,379, a $184 increase over the current price. That's nearly $400 over the price of a Braille Sense Plus and just under $800 over the retail price of a PAC Mate Omni, the latter including 8 more cells.At the same time, the price of the 18-cell version of the Apex will jump to $4,529, a $134 increase. Finally, the price of the VoiceNote Apex, to be released in September, has been set at $2,049. That's just over $50 more than the price of a VoiceSense, but nearly $350 under the price of a PAC Mate Omni without a braille display.

We've obtained some more information in relation to the Freedom Scientific lawsuit vs. the Foundation for Blind Children we posted about earlier. The lawsuit references various exhibits which are aledgedly violating trademarks held by Freedom Scientific. Here is one such exhibit, which appears to be 30 pages of advertisements for Freedom Scientific products from the foundation's website. These pages are no longer on the site.

Lawsuit Roundup: Freedom Scientific Sues Foundation for Blind Children, U.S. Government in Separate Cases

Freedom Scientific has filed two additional lawsuits over the past month. In one suit, they aledge the Foundation for Blind Children, an Arizona nonprofit who was formerly a dealer, is using trademarks without authorization and after their contract was terminated. The organization operates a store which sells technology products, but no products from Freedom Scientific were found in the store as of the time of this post. In a separate proceeding, Freedom Scientific is seeking financial remedies from the U.S. Government in regards to a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. New Law May Help Blind Get Accessible Books on Time

A buried provision the Higher Education Opportunity Act may help blind and visually impaired students obtain accessible copies of textbooks on time. That's because the law requires colleges and universities to list the required textbooks for a class at the time of registration. The provision went into effect earlier this year, and may save students from scurrying around at the last minute in order to find a copy of a book, much less an accessible version.
