Looking for an Intern

As you can tell, we've been quite light on the postings lately. So, we're looking for an intern to help run the site, especially over the summer. The pay isn't much ($100 a month), but it's a great experience and something you can use for your resume. Read on to see what you need to do. OK, since you're still reading, you must be interested or really bored. Here's what we need from you.

A 4-5 sentence paragraph on why you would make the perfect Blind Bargains intern
Two samples of deals or news postings you would submit to the site. They should be in or near the style we use to post. Please include the URL for your deal as a reference and use proper grammar and spelling.
Your name, location, age, phone number, Email address, and any other good ways to contact you (messengers, Skype, etc.)

If you haven't heard, a huge virus is set to hit computers across the world on April 1. Microsoft has released a Windows patch which you should have if you have automatic updates enabled. But to be safe, follow the link on this post and download one of the tools linked on the Department of Homeland Security website. We're running the one from Mcafee called Stinger now and it seems reasonably accessible.

Lexmark Accessibility Solution is Big News around the Office

With all of the talk of stream 3.0, the Book Sense, and Orator, this announcement from Lexmark has slipped under the radar a bit. But Lexmark's new accessibility solution, titled the Lexmark Accessibility Solution (creative, eh?) will offer blind and visually impaired users access to touch-screen MFP devices such as scanners, copiers, and fax machines. The user sets up a job on a Windows PC or even a BrailleSense and then goes over to the Lexmark device to start it. It's refreshing to see some access to these increasingly complicated machines. We don't have price information yet, but I'm thinking not that cheap. Somebody prove me wrong.

Plug and Play Braille is Big News

While Macintosh users will probably complain that this is old news, it's worth noting the latest developments concerning HandyTech's Easy Braille. Windows computer users have always been able to go to a store, buy a keyboard, and plug it in and use it. No drivers or special software was required. But for braille displays, special support had to be written into each screen reader, leading to headaches and increased costs. The latest update to the Easy Braille, slated for this May, is advertised to solve this problem by supporting the industry-standard Human Interface Device or HID protocol. This potentially means that users can walk up to a computer, plug in a braille display, and get on with their work. It remains to be seen how this will work in practice, but it's a welcome addition to a $4,500 product.

Questions Answered on GW Micro's BookSense, the Stream Killer?

It will still be several months before we are able to hold a production model of a BookSense, GW Micro's new portable audio player, but the feature list looks impressive so far. The support for over a dozen audio formats dwarfs any other solution in the specialized AT market. And the bluetooth support in the XT model looks promising. But whether all of this will be enough to convince tens of thousands of stream users to make the switch remains to be seen.
