Thermaltake BlacX eSATA USB Docking Station for $$37.99 Shipped

Amazon.com has the Thermaltake BlacX eSATA USB Docking Station for $$37.99. That's $19 more than our last mention, but still the lowest price we could find. To review, this is a must have in your arsenal of computer gear. Take any sata 2.5 or 3.5 inch drive, pop it into the top of the unit like a toaster or an old Super Nintendo cartridge, hook it to your computer via e-sata or USB, turn the unit on, and the drive mounts. This is a great way to back up or access data when you don't have an enclosure hanging around. When you're done with the drive, simply power off the unit and press the eject button. The drive will pop up and you can pull it out.
Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 1. A Giant Leap Backward for Amazon

We've made it! It's time for our number 1 story on our annual look at the top stories of 2011. Our panel of Blind Bargains and Serotek contributors each independently submitted their votes for the top stories of the year. This year's panel included Joe Steinkamp, Jamie Pauls, Kevin Reeves, Matt McCubbin, and J.J. Meddaugh. Here are our earlier stories in case you missed them. And now, number one.

There was no clear top story on this year's list, and one could make a case for several of our picks. But after tabulating and ranking the votes from our panel, Amazon's absolute and total disregard for accessibility stole the show.

With the release of the Kindle 3, Amazon fans began to hold out hope that the company was tired of lawsuits and ready for some real change. The anticipation and subsequent release has been represented on both of our previous year-end recaps.

This year's release of the Kindle Fire, however, clearly brings us to question the real philosophy of Amazon and whether they care one smidge about access at all. Maybe some people in the company didn't get the memo. Perhaps they'd love to deal with another lawsuit which we're confident is right around the corner. Whatever it is, Amazon is perhaps the biggest company with the worst accessibility initiative, which shows us that much work still needs to be done in fighting for equal access across the board.

What will 2012 bring? We'll have to wait just under 365 days to find out. In the meantime, get ready for the 2011 Blind Bargains Access Awards, recognizing the best products, services, and innovations of the year gone bye. Happy New Year.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 2. The Demise of Qwitter

We're just about done with our look at the top stories of 2011. Number 2 is all about the Twitter drama and we go back to Joe Steinkamp for the story.

Notoriety is a fickle thing. And it doesn ™t always bring about fame and fortune.
It can, as seen earlier this year, bring on headaches and forking of a project. Quitter
demonstrated the beauty and the pitfalls of Open Source. It also, unfortunately,
showed the darker side of a community enraged with some forms of snarkyness that
the internet is never in short supply of on just about any subject. There are lots
of fingers to be pointed in various directions for the who and the why , almost
as many as the various offshoots of Quitter actually, and this too shall pass into
obscurity like so much other Twitter Drama ™. For now though, it was one of the bigger
stories of 2011. It's number 2 on this year's list.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 3. Apple Does it Again

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. Number 3 involves perhaps the most amazing iPhone yet.

If there's any solid indication of the success of a product amongst the blind community, it's when that product reaches a point that non-technically minded people start raving about its features and benefits. Love it or hate it, the iPhone has transcended from a cool tech toy to perhaps the most purchased new phone by a blind person in 2011. The iPhone 4S added more fuel to the fire, allowing for customers from three of the four major U.S. carriers to get in on the action. And for those who are still a bit scared by the prospect of using a touch-screen, Siri arrived to save the day, allowing for the dictation of messages, the setting of alarms, and much more. Siri isn't the first voice assistant and it won't be the last, but Apple has once again succeeded at turning a feature from a novelty to a must-have. Other accessibility improvements this year included talking face recognition and support for the new greeting card app. You just don't find that level of commitment from many developers, mainstream or not. Apple still has progress to make for a perfect solution, but they've certainly taken the mobile phone world by storm and caused others such as Google, Nokia, and Code Factory to take notice and reevaluate their strategy.

Apple's release of the iPhone 4S and their continued smartphone dominance lands them at number 3.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

If This Then That Helps to Simplify Tedious Tasks

If This Then That is a website that does exactly wat the title says, though the results may be much more cool than you think. Suppose you want to copy your important E-mails to your Dropbox, or receive a text message if it's supposed to rain tomorrow. If This Then That does all of this and more. All you need is a this and a that. A trigger can be anything from a new Facebook post to a Foursquare Check-in while a that can be one of dozens of actions, such as making a phone call or posting to Twitter. Accessibility is quite good for the site and we were able to set up our first task with ease. You can share your own tasks as recipes for others to use. Here's a recipe we made which will send you a text message whenever a new item is posted to Blind Bargains.
Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 4. Code Factory Reinvents Itself

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. We're counting down the top stories of the year and will announce the number one live on Serospectives Thursday night. Number 4 takes us back to Android for a new program from a familiar face.

With the iPhone rapidly gaining in popularity and Symbian and Windows Mobile phones on a rapid decline, just about everyone knew that Code Factory had to do something, and that something was destined to be Android. But few expected Mobile Accessibility to do as much as it does given Android's then-limited resources for developers. Code Factory included a built-in web browser, an intuitive voice dictation feature, and a rather functional virtual keyboard in its Mobile Accessibility suite, giving those who either by choice or by force didn't want the iPhone another option. Though many of the features in the suite have since been duplicated by others or Google's own code, Code Factory deserves much credit for jumping on the Android bandwagon when few others were willing to do so.

Joe Steinkamp adds some further thoughts. Even more stunning was the decision to unbundle the Accessible
Browser, arguably one of the best features of the MA suite, as a separate standalone
download on the Android market for 1/5 the price of MA. Code Factory has truly shown
that they can thrive in the new world of Accessibility. Kudos!

So Mobile Accessibility comes in at number 4. We'll cover the top 3 live on Serospectives at 9 PM on Thursday. Don't miss it.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 5. The Death of a Pioneer

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. We're counting down the top stories of the year over the coming days and will announce the number one live on Serospectives Thursday night. Number 5 belongs to one of the saddest days in the history of computing, and Kevin Reeves is here to talk about it.

On Wednesday, October 5, 2011, the world was shocked by the sudden death of Apple
cofounder Steve Jobs. While we all were aware of his battle with Pancreatic Cancer,
we were in the dark about it's severity. Jobs made it his life goal to create products
that were innovative and groundbreaking. He also contributed greatly to the disabled
community by incorporating access technology right into the products themselves without
the need of 3rd party adaptations. He was a true talent that will be truly missed.

The death of Steve Jobs is number 5 on our countdown of the top stories of 2011. By the way, you'll have your chance to vote for the best of 2011 with the 5th annual Blind Bargains Access Awards, coming later this week.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 6. GW Micro Got Us Talking

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. We're counting down the top stories of the year over the next week and will announce the number one live on Serospectives Thursday night. Number 6 belongs to a new Skype client that got many people talking.

Here's Kevin Reeves with his explanation of the story. Earlier this year, skype opened it's API, allowing app developers to build entire
apps around the skype framework. One of the first to take full advantage of it's
open API was GW Micro, makers of Window Eyes. On Dec 20, just in time for Christmas,
GW released GW Skype 1.0, a fully accessible skype application. And in true form,
some of the blind community was enraged that an application, free to everyone, would
contain advertisements of other GW products. This caused such a backlash that twitter
timelines were filled with said discussion. We praise GW Micro for their release and will be interested to follow the ad-based software in 2012.

Let's go to Joe for his take on the story.
In a crazy world of tweeting, Facebook status liking, Stumble Upon users, one must
do what one must to be heard over the white noise to get your message heard. And
yes, sorry folks, that message can be advertising based. For the internet ™s series
of tubes and pipes are funded mostly by ads rather than good intentions. However,
both lay at the feet of GW Skype. No matter how you feel about this clever use of
technology, the fact of the matter is that the Blind can and will hear more advertising
going forward as the traditional business model of Assistive Technology changes in
2012 and beyond. Besides, where do you think Google gets all their money? Raising
Unicorns near the Rainbow Bridge on Gumdrop Mountain for a petting zoo near the Emerald
City? Nope, and you aren ™t in Kansas anymore either Dorothy.

For more insightful technology takes, check out The Ranger Station Blog, where Joe is counting down his personal top 10. GW Skype is number 6 on this year's countdown.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

NFB Flagship Publication Rips Blio in eBook Comparison

The National Federation of the Blind's Braille Monitor often publishes comparisons of technology in its pages. The January, 2012 issue issue includes one such comparison, giving pros and cons of several eBook platforms. We were a bit surprised, however, to see a rather scathing review of Blio, a project supported by KNFB Reading Technology and greatly hyped at NFB functions. To be clear, KNFB is a separate entity and now operates independently from the NFB. Many people still operate under the impression that the two are one in the same, however, and it is possible that the NFB is starting to disassociate with KNFB due to the lack of access for the Blio platform. Blio remains questionably accessible at best on a PC and completely inaccessible on the Android platform. The article itself is a good read, by the way.
Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 7. Live from Daytona

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. We're counting down the top stories of the year over the next week and will announce the number one live on Serospectives Thursday night. Number 7 is live from Daytona.

In January, history was made at Daytona International Speedway as a blind driver took to the speedway an navigated a course around the track. Mark Riccobono was behind the wheel of a Ford Escape vehicle modified with a nonvisual interface as part of an ongoing project between the NFB and Virginia Tech University.

The event ignited much discussion and controversy about the actual usefulness of the project and whether the research was justified or just a far-flung dream that'll never become reality.

In our view, however, the event was less about the actual blind man driving and more about the possible technology effects that could result. Just as military research during wartime resulted in such technological advances as GPS now used by millions of people, the research garnered from the Blind Driver Challenge has the potential to present similar ripple effects. Many blind people would benefit from better ways of indoor navigation, however, or additional ways to give a nonvisual view of their surroundings. Potential exists for mainstream automation and driverless drones to perform all sorts of tasks. The Blind Driver Challenge is a far flung idea, but the end result may be well worth the price of admission. This is why, it comes in at number 7 on this year's list.

Listen in to Blind Bargains coverage from trackside at the Blind Driver Challenge. You can also listen to the press conference after the event.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 8. A Major Android Leap Forward

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. We're counting down the top stories of the year over the next week, and will announce the number one live on Serospectives next Thursday. Number 8 takes us to the land of desserts.

To say this has been a rollercoaster year for Google in terms of accessibility would be an understatement. No company perhaps has been both praised and condemned more for their decisions or lack of decisions involving access to website services, computers, and Android. So when Google sought feedback from users during a focus group at CSUN and spoke of change at this summer's conventions, there was naturally many skeptics in the crowd. But Ice Cream sandwich, the latest iteration of the Android operating system, has at least proved that real progress is being made.

Google has started to address some of the major weaknesses in Android accessibility by enabling touch-screen exploration, the ability to independently turn on accessibility, and adding additional support for developers which should soon allow for braille display support, among other things. While there are still improvements to be made, the number of Google employees who appear to be tackling accessibility problems seems to be increasing rapidly. The hope of a companywide accessibility vision will still take time (exhibit A, the inaccessible Google currents app), but even Apple isn't perfect (exhibit B, the iOS productivity suite including Numbers and Pages).

Access to Android is important because the operating system is the most used in the mainstream community and it along with Apple gives blind people access to the top two mobile platforms. Android phones are also available for virtually every wireless carrier, allowing customers freedom of choice when it comes to choosing a wireless provider. We look forward to the future progress of Google's desserts in 2012. Ice cream sandwich is number 8 on our list of the top stories of 2011. Check back next time for number 7.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 9. The LookTel Money Reader

We're continuing our look at the top stories of 2011. We're counting down the top stories of the year over the next week, and will announce the number one live on Serospectives next thursday. Number 9 involves one of the most influencial apps of the year.

In 2009, the first ever story on our first year-end look back involved the iBill. At the time, we wrote, "While the ability to accurately identify money is nothing new, the price point is certainly attention-grabbing at under $100.." Well, if under $100 turned some eyebrows, under $2 took things to another level.

Earlier this year, Ipplex introduced the LookTel money identification app for iOS devices. For iPhone and other Apple device owners, it represented another melding of mainstream and assistive technology, as the app eliminated the need to carry around a one-task device for a single job. LookTel represents the early stages of a trend of mainstream devices performing tasks formerly relegated to dedicated devices. Apps to read BookShare titles and a promised way to read NLS books are further examples of this trend, which will surely continue into 2012.
Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2011: 10. Chrome OS and the ChromeVox Screen Reader

Oh what a year it has been. Just as other years will be remembered for their breakout stories, this year may be remembered as one which brought more questions than answers. This also became evident in our voting for the top 10 stories of 2011, where no clear winner emerged. But as the saying reminds us, the show must go on. Our panel of Blind Bargains and Serotek contributors each independently submitted their votes for the top stories of 2011. This year's panel included Joe Steinkamp, Jamie Pauls, Kevin Reeves, Matt McCubbin, and J.J. Meddaugh. We'll count down the top stories of the year over the next week, and announce the number one live on Serospectives next week. So without further hesitation, let's start off with number ten, involving a new Google operating system.

Google garnered a lot of mainstream press with the release of the Chromebook, it's entry into the world of mobile computing. The open-source operating system aimed to change the way we think about computers, offering a more cloud-based computing experience, though more people may have been talking about the lack of a caps lock key. While the operating system has barely registered a blip amongst blind people, it deserves some recognition for including accessibility out of the box, nearly from the beginning of its existence. While the idea of built-in access is nothing new, its inclusion at such an early stage of its product life cycle is notable, considering how many years it took Apple to do the same and Microsoft's lack of commitment on the subject.

The accessibility features shine most in the use of the Chrome web browser, which already passed Firefox in market share according to at least one survey. The ChromeVox screen reading functions of the browser and other Chrome OS features are already filtering down to Android accessibility as well, and Google, after many frustrating hours, seems to be starting to come over to the good side of accessibility. For the blind and visually impaired, the ChromeBook will be one to watch, which is why it starts off our countdown this year at number 10.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Blind Bargains Updates Jaws and Window-Eyes Search Tools

We are pleased to announce updated versions of our popular search apps for Jaws for Windows and Window-Eyes users. These programs provide a simple way to search for products from dozens of merchants, including products from blindness-related companies. Thanks to Grant and the development team at Freedom Scientific, the Jaws Research-It add-in is now compatible with Jaws 13.
Window-Eyes users can install our updated Product Search script, a custom box which allows you to search for products and scroll through the results. With the app, it's simple to browse descriptions and open the websites for the products you are interested in. Other features allow you to copy the product's URL to the clipboard or export your results to a text file.
Jaws users can try the Research-It script, written by Sean Randall. The Blind Bargains Product Search allows you to search for specific items directly from the Jaws Research-it command. You can find these programs on our new apps page, a central page where we will post the latest applications that are compatible with our site. If you have any comments or ideas for improvements, please don't hesitate to write us. If you are a developer and wish to create a Blind Bargains application for any platform or device, please send us a message. We offer simple tools to make programming apps as simple as possible.
Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.

Comparing the Tassimo and Keurig Single-cup Coffee Systems

Coffee is great, but it can be a pain to deal with. While some romanticize the daily ritual of preparing delicious coffee made with french presses and other premium methods, most people just want a decent cup of joe. Drip coffee is somewhat convenient, but the taste usually isn ™t great and drip makers brew in bulk. For many people single serving coffee makers are the way to go. Here are the major brands compared.

Keurig

Keurig single serve coffee makers are the traditional standard, if such a thing can exist. Keurig has been around since 1996 and is the father of modern single serve coffee makers.

Keurig coffee makers rely on K-Cups, which are small containers of prepared coffee or other beverages. Keurig has the biggest selection of coffee brands to choose from, and features many of the best premium varieties.

One thing to note with Keurig machines is that, while they are great at brewing coffee, their ability to brew other types of beverages is limited. Some do feature temperature control, but their ability is limited compared to the competition like Tassimo.

Keurig machines have one major advantage over their chief competitor, and that is the My K-Cup ($19.88 at Amazon), which lets you brew with coffee you bought.

If you go for a Keurig, look for one with a large, removable water reservoir. Most of the small varieties can only hold enough water for a single cup. My personal favorite is the Keurig B-70 Platinum ($164 at Amazon), but you might want the Keurig Mini Plus ($96.25 at Amazon) for the price. The latter is more compact and has a single-cup water reservoir.

Tassimo

You can think of Tassimo coffee makers as the evolution of Keurig machines. They use T-Discs, which are like K-Cups but with barcodes that can pass information to the brewer.

Tassimo brewers are significantly more advanced than Keurig machines. They have microprocessors in them capable of decoding barcodes. The barcodes tell the machine the temperatures to brew at and pass other special information.

Interestingly, Tassimo coffee makers historically haven ™t brewed as good of a cup of coffee as Keurig machines, but they handle other drinks better. The computerized control of the temperature means that Tassimo brewers can handle tea, hot chocolate, and even soup with ease.

Tassimo machines are slightly more expensive than Keurig machines, and their discs are also more pricey than K-Cups.

As with Keurig machines, look for a removable water reservoir, though all their current models seem to feature them. I would personally go with the Bosch TAS4511UC Tassimo Single-Serve Coffee Brewer ($104.27 at Amazon), as it has the best balance of features and price.

What is your prefered method for brewing coffee? Let us know in the comments.

Post a comment

Shopping is a breeze with our Blind Bargains Apps.
