Reading and food might just be two of the things we excel at the most here on BBQ. Reading about food is also a fun thing we do from time to time. This week we'll feature segments on reading, food and some painful audio in the "Last Word". We'll speak with Alex Tavares and Cory Kadlik about the Read Read, a device which can help blind students learn braille. We take a visit back to the Blind Bargains test kitchen for another appliance. But rest assured that there are no cats mentioned in this episode. Okay, one cat does make an appearance. We're just not saying where.

Freedom Scientific has released version 9 of its popular OpenBook scanning and OCR software for Windows PCs. In addition to the anticipated support for the new PEARL video camera, the new release also will allow for the camera to act as a video magnifier with zooming capabilities. OpenBook borrows a feature from popular mainstream applications such as OmniPage, enabling the ability to create scanning workflows for common tasks. OpenBook 9 includes RealSpeak™ Solo Direct synthesizers from Nuance® Communications, the same ones available for JAWS and MAGic users. The JAWS ILM licensing scheme has also made its way into OpenBook 9. For a complete list including many more changes, check the link on this post.
Buy.com has OmniPage 17 standard for $62.99. With free shipping, this is the best deal we could find on this program by about $30. Don't let the standard version fool you. It still includes the same
highly-accurate OCR engine as its much more expensive pro cousin with 99.9 percent text recognition accuracy.
Another chapter in the patent lawsuit between Freedom Scientific and GW Micro was concluded last December when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected Freedom Scientific's appeal of the original ruling which would, in essence, wipe out the place marker patent. Freedom Scientific is allowed another appeal of the ruling, and filed this appeal in February. We have provided links to the October appeal and the resulting decision handed down in accessible plain text.
Amazon.com has the standard version of OmniPage 17 for $103.49. Though this is at least $20 more than our black friday deal, this is still $50 off the list price, and is currently the best deal we can find on this software. Omnipage 17 features 99.9 percent text recognition accuracy.
There were some problems with the Omnipage link we posted, but one of our readers found a better deal.

In searching for a way to send and receive faxes from home, we came upon MyFax, and are convinced it's the simplest such service around. Sending a fax is as simple as attaching it to an Email message, while our received faxes come to the same Email box. Currently, get the third month for free when buying two months of service, which starts at around $10 per month for a basic plan. Numbers are available in a wide variety of area codes, and the site and service are quite accessible. Note that your received faxes will come in a graphical format like .TIF or .PDF so you'll need a program like Kurzweil 1000 or OmniPage to read them with a screen reader.

Now you can gain access to a number of cloud services, including Microsoft Live SkyDrive, Google Docs, Box.net, and many more. Plus, files are accessed in the PaperPort folder directory, so you can scan, stack, or unstack PDF files, and create PDF files directly in the cloud. Evernote "Send To" Connector:
Drag-and-drop files to the Evernote Send To Connector, create a new note or add the document to an existing note. You can also right click on the Evernote connector and get files attached to any note so they are copied to the PaperPort desktop. Enhanced network folder support:
PaperPort 14 now takes advantage of fast, reliable thumbnail viewing of documents stored on shared network folders. Additionally, PaperPort 14 locks files in use over the network to prevent problems that may occur when more than one person tries to view or modify the same file. Windows file and folder options:
In PaperPort 14, the Windows Context menu is supported by right-clicking on any file, so you can access Windows or other software and perform key tasks, including compressing and uncompressing ZIP files. Scanning improvements:
We've enhanced PaperPort's scanning capabilities in PaperPort 14, so scanned color documents using PDF-MRC compression are now 62% smaller. Other time saving highlights include scan and open a document with one press of a button, create and save default custom file names, and create PDF/A directly from your scanner. New workspace options for greater productivity:
With PaperPort 14, there's no need to remember where you put a recently scanned or opened file. New buttons have been added for "recently scanned" and "recently opened" documents, so you can quickly jump back to a folder that contains a recently scanned or opened document. Folder notes improvements:
Now you can right click on any folder in the folder directory and get an option to add notes directly to that particular folder. This enhancement is useful for applying information to PDF documents that are common to all files in a particular file, such as contact information (e.g., name, address, telephone number); project or customer IDs; or numbers, reminders, document descriptions, and more. Improved desktop thumbnails for PDF:
In PaperPort 14 the PDF document thumbnails offer more information about PDF documents to save you time and focus on more important tasks. A large information icon now appears in the upper left-hand corner of PDF document thumbnails, indicating the file contains keywords and descriptive text. Hover over the icon, and it will display the information so you don't have to open the file. Category: DVD-ROM.
