Amazon.com has the TRENDnet USB to Serial Converter for $12.09. Shipping adds about $5, or is free on orders of $25 or more or for Amazon Prime members. This cable lets you plug in your old serial speech synthesizers and other devices to a USB port on a laptop or desktop.

This will work fine for a mostly one-way device like a serial Braille display, but for a speech synthesizer you need a fully-compatible RS/232 converter. Anything based on a Keyspan or higher-end FTDI chipset should do the job, I'd suggest either the Keyspan USA19HS or the EasySync RD222. They're more expensive, but for any synthesizer post-1990 that need indexing to function properly, you really do need a full converter. I'm one of those that use, and like, external speech synthesizers. I primarily use a Keynote SA (yep, that's right) with an EasySync RD222 USB to serial converter.
