Blind Bargains Top 10 Stories of 2012: 7. New Braille Displays in Focus

We're well on our way to revealing the top story of 2012 in our Blind Bargains top 10. This year's panel included participants from across the assistive technology scene: Darren Burton, Jason Meddaugh, Wayne Merritt, Jamie Pauls and Joe Steinkamp. We'll post a new story every day until we reach number one. Also, we've partnered with SeroTalk and will be participating on their year in review show coming in early January, so stay tuned. In case you missed them, you can read our earlier stories on our countdown. Number 7 is all about portable braille displays.

Let's go to Joe for his take on number 7:

"The buzz about, the desire for and the product spotting in the wild of the Focus 14 have been on full display at almost every event I attended in 2012. People want a small, cheaper display that works well with JAWS and still pairs to other devices like an iPhone. And this unit may just fit the spot, and the pocketbook, for many looking for this kind of display. There are many options in the 20 cell and below field, however, it sure seemed like Freedom Scientific was able to capture a lot of the conversation in this arena during 2012 with the release of the Focus 14."

Listen to an interview with Freedom Scientific on the Focus 14, and more, from SeroTalk's coverage of the blinded Veterans Association National Convention.

With the iPad, laptops, and perhaps the Nexus 7 stealing the spotlight from dedicated notetaking solutions, it also is not surprising that more portable braille display solutions would become increasingly popular. Freedom Scientific appears to have the right combination of size, features, and price and has been winning over many hearts with their latest versions of the Focus line.
